Yes, personality typing of fictional characters exists on the internet. Personality database, although not precisely the most reliable choice, but a good reference to start, is a website where MBTI and character enthusiasts come together to enjoy studying the particular topic on personality type archetypes. This is great as it provides additional data for analysis to the study on MBTI theory.

Analysts

Also known as “Rationals”, analysts enjoy making decisions as logically as possible, with an aided abstract sense. This makes them natural strategists, inventors, and debaters.

INTJ

Makise Kurisu, Steins; Gate Kurisu is a science prodigy, a cerebral lady. She is smart and contemplative about the general concept of time travel. She doesn’t hesitate to voice out her thoughts to others for the progression of their project.  She is thoughtful about forming good relationships with those she surrounds herself with, but when logically speaking, she prefers to express that part of her introverted feeling (Fi). Ryo Asuka, Devilman Crybaby Ryo is the main antagonist from “Devilman Crybaby”. He comes off as extremely smart but arrogant and violent. He is a young professor who showed great interest in “letting out the demon” in people. Ryo Asuka showed signs of extroverted thinking in his function stack, a function that makes a person inclined to quick action and makes them appear bossy or intimidating. Ryo appears to be Ni-Te (INTJ) rather than Te-Ni (ENTJ) due to his sometimes laid-back nature, especially when he is with his close friend, Akira.

INTP

Zeke Yeager, Attack on Titan Zeke is a good example of an INTP personality type. His ideas of ending the Eldian suffrage are inclusive, thanks to his introverted thinking function (Ti) and auxiliary extroverted intuition (Ne). Despite being a rational type, he shows feelings of care towards his half-brother Eren. INTPs are more easily likable due to their more easygoing and open-minded nature to readily communicate, more so than INTJs. Lain Iwakura, Serial Experiments Lain Lain is a shy-type, quiet, high school girl at the start of the show. As the story progress, she finds herself getting caught up in what is called the WIRED.  At first, she finds difficulty in understanding why a classmate of hers is crying on her school chair. This refers to Lain being a careful thinker who is trying to know the reason why a person is sad. She was slightly bewildered when she found out that it was because a fellow classmate of theirs, Chisa Yomoda, has committed suicide. She goes on passively until her curiosity brought her to developing other strange, complex personalities. She has become very advanced in setting up and working with computers in order to connect to the mysterious WIRED.

ENTJ

Griffith, Berserk Known as another enigma, some may type Griffith from Berserk as either INTJ or ENTJ. Griffith is a character who is primarily invested in his dream or vision in life. He has proven himself to be an excellent commander on the battlefield and is like a “walking perfection” in the eyes of others.  Despite this, he has dark secrets going on that only he knows. He goes so far as to rationalize everything that happened to him, disregarding the lives of his comrades in order to come up with the bloody decision towards his sole goal, to be king. Light Yagami, Death Note “I will become the God of this new world.” Light is an astonishingly eloquent and strategic character and a clear ENTJ over INTJ due to his innate charisma and aggressiveness of speech when it comes to explaining himself. He is quick to construct a word debate in order to get himself out of a dangerous situation. He is dominant extroverted thinking (Te) user because he goes out and deals with matters by outwardly interacting boldly with people who got in his way. His (Te) is supported by his introverted intuition, which helped him win over thrilling battles against his enemies.

ENTP

Arataka Reigen, Mob Psycho 100 Reigen is also known as “Master Reigen” by the INFP protagonist Mob, but he is a con artist.  Reigen is able to move his way through life to the use of his (Fe) charisma as tertiary function; (Ne) through his ability to speak confidently and invent ideas along the way as dominant function; and (Ti) his ability to remain logical and objective as his auxiliary function. Rintaro Okabe, Steins;Gate Okurin or “001” calls himself a mad scientist. He is clearly extroverted because of his ability to speak loudly and his ability to interfere in a serious science conference.  This character has shown to be good at inventing dialogues through the use of the (Ne) function, which is supported by (Ti) in order to seemingly hide his feelings (Fe) which would, of course, result in his charisma, despite acting like a fool majority of the time.

Diplomats

Diplomats are harmonious, kind, and generous personality types. They prioritize making a connection with others and help others on a general scope. These types are more inclined to shine powerfully on empathy, being gentle, and also being mindful of their creative thoughts and beliefs.

INFJ

Kenshin Himura, Samurai X Kenshin is a trained samurai who was once dedicated to slaying other people’s lives, only to have changed later in life. He made sure he did his job well and despite being a runt with the x-scar on his face, his kind and eventually carefree personality is what shines through and makes people like and regard him as a hero. Norman, The Promise Neverland Norman is the platinum-blonde-haired math prodigy from The Promised Neverland. He is generally observed as kind and wise in nature. He is at top of the class, but also shows empathy and consideration towards Emma and the other children.  He knows how to laugh at himself when things go wrong, and knows how to plan and lead without being too harsh or commanding. He is observant and gentle in nature and also obviously an intellectual.

INFP

Kenzo Tenma, Monster Dr. Kenza Tenma is a wonderful example of the INFP personality type. He is a good-hearted character and a highly skillful and talented surgeon. He found himself in a situation wherein he despised the hospital’s dark and wrongful schemes all due to his decision to save a boy who got shot in the head, who came in first, rather than save the mayor for the hospital’s recognition. And yet, in a very ironic and strange turn of events, the boy he saved eventually grew up to become a murderous psychopath. Dr. Tenma leads with introverted feeling (Fi), which is a function that values an individual’s personal beliefs and feelings when making a decision. This is a function that values morality, idealism, and being fully attuned to what your feelings are saying. The decision that Tenma made was due to his (Fi), which strives for a world that is not corrupted, but a world that is right and compassionate, regardless of status. His (Ne) or extroverted intuition, is what made Tenma connect the dots and decide to go after his mission of catching Johan, the psychopath, in order to further make things right. Tenma’s decision was not a mistake, it just shows how dark and twisted the world is. Kiba, Wolf’s Rain Kiba is a cool protagonist from Wolf’s Rain. He can shape-shift to take the form of a beautiful white wolf. His only quest in life is to find paradise on Earth. He believes it exists. It is what kept him going. While he is very strong about his moral beliefs and in his fight for what he feels is right, he is also protective of his friends which is definitely a (Fi) dominant. Kiba has been shown to be more of a (Te) inferior rather than (Se) inferior.  So totally an INFP over INFJ.

ENFJ

Emma, The Promised Neverland The heroine of The Promised Neverland is a great ENFJ at heart. She cares about the well-being of others while being a charismatic leader. In addition to being athletic and clever, she is loves spending time with others and having a meaningful connection with them. Her extroverted feeling (Fe) is what makes her be considerate of others because she is aware of other people’s feelings. Her auxiliary introverted intuition (Ni) is what makes her know that she can’t leave others behind because they mean a lot to her.  For Emma, leaving the other children behind will feel like letting go of the people who make her the happiest. Teruki Hanazawa, Mob Psycho 100 At the first start of the show, the charismatic Teruki has shown himself to be an arrogant teenager who takes a lot of confidence from his looks and psychic powers. He used to be slightly insecure of Mob, but now he has accepted the fact that they both have different styles of psychic powers. Teruki displayed extroverted feelings (Fe) as the show progressed through having a friendly connection with others, and by being helpful to his friends in need.

ENFP

Haruhi Suzumiya, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Haruhi Suzumiya is a strange girl who wants to live in a world of supernatural happenings. Due to her aggressive yet oddly charming nature, some may type her as an ENFJ, ENTJ, ENTP, or even ESTP, but it is concluded that she is a highly charged ENFP. Suzumiya is often described positively as an assertive visionary with irrepressible charm, which sounds like an ENFP description. Toboe, Wolf’s Rain Toboe is the younger main character in Wolf’s Rain. Like Kiba, he can also transform into a wolf. He was orange hair and a benevolent expression on his face. He is consistently friendly and kind towards those he meets.  He shows amazing value to keep others in mind and encourages them to join their pack on the journey towards paradise. Sentinels Sentinels are known for being cooperative, grounded, and practical. They are good at being confident in themselves and their competence. These types have introverted sensing in their cognitive function stack, which makes them highly attuned to experiences or physical details listed in the past and reviewing them to help them make clear and practical decisions.

ISTJ

Violet Evergarden, Violet Evergarden Violet used to be a soldier who fought bravely during the war. She has returned home as a quiet and emotionally detached, yet still beautiful young girl. She doesn’t imagine much and focuses on real-life, practical tasks. She was educated to function more as a tool against the war rather than act like a human being. She sets out on a journey of self-discovery in order to understand the words spoken to her by her major in the moments that lead up to the end of the war.

ISFJ

Madoka Kaname, Madoka Magica Madoka Kaname is a shy and sweet girl who has a lot of friends. She is a magical girl who kills the witches of a depressed person. She doesn’t hold grudges and she’s willing to sacrifice her entire existence in order to save any more magic girls’ lives. Shouko Nishimiya, A Silent Voice Shouko is a deaf and mute character in the movie but despite this minor setback, she is a very kind and lovable ISFJ. Her love interest in this film started off as a jerk towards her, but despite that, she still remains patient towards him, while she remained strong and accepting of her own abilities and direction in life.

ESTJ

Asuka Langley Soryu, Neon Genesis Evangelion A very feisty character. Obviously an ESTJ. She can as well be an ENTJ, but ESTJ makes more sense. She is highly competitive and confident about her snappy abilities. She is commanding and organized but also displays a turbulent array of emotional issues. She appears to have more Si than Ni due to her not displaying that many signs of abstract thinking and engagement in philosophy. She is more aware of the sensory details around her. So ESTJ it is.

ESFJ

Ayumi Yamada, Honey, and Clover Ayumi is a graduate art student from the wonderfully nostalgic Honey and Clover. She is also known as the “Iron Lady” because of her high energy and talent in pottery. Generally, she is a friendly person and can socialize easily.  She becomes emotional whenever she remembers her relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Takumi Mayama, and would find ways to get back with him to discuss what went wrong. All understandable drama aside, Ayumi is a very pleasant, hardworking, and charming person who is a good friend of Hagumi Hanamoto. Kazuya Kujo, Gosick Kujo-kun is funny and clumsy but nevertheless, a responsible friend of Victorique in Gosick. He appears to be amiable and approachable, and whatever Victorique does to him, he internalizes it and understands it as part of who she is.  Kujo-kun is more observant of the world around him and of Victorique, so Extroverted-Feeling dominant paired with introverted sensing makes sense. Explorers Explorers are personality types who manage to handle unexpected situations very well. They like the thrill of doing the challenge in the present moment. Even if they are not necessarily one hundred percent prepared, they can deliver a good show. They are more attuned with “usefulness” as opposed to “perfection” which is more of an abstract term, which is why characters typed in this category are highly skillful and focused on the task at hand.

ISTP

Guts, Berserk Guts is a highly skilled swordsman from the 1997 classic, golden anime Berserk. Guts is a very tough protagonist who doesn’t give a damn about what others think but proves to be likable and respectable (Ti). Everyone adores him because he is a good character beneath his dexterity and intimidating figure (Se). Levi Ackerman, Attack on Titan Levi has garnered a lot of fans worldwide. It is most likely due to the bored yet highly observant expression on his face, and not to mention his prowess on the battlefield. Many people at first typed him as an INTJ, but ISTP makes more sense due to Levi’s preference to focus on matters that are more practical, rather than ponder on conceptual thoughts.

ISFP

Eren Yeager, Attack on Titan Attack on Titan’s new legendary protagonist is typed as an ISFP because of his intense passion to go after his goal of exterminating all titans in the world. “I’ll kill them all! Every last one of them!” Eren doesn’t hesitate to raise his voice loudly whenever he feels someone is attacking his moral beliefs, a sign of a (Fi) dominant with Se function as their auxiliary. Chii, Chobits Chii is a very cute character from Chobits. She is of easygoing nature, observant and clever. She analyzes what she perceives in the world around her in a straightforward yet meaningful manner. Despite not being a human, she learns fast and she manages to get a job at a pastry shop to help provide food for Hideki, her beloved owner. She wears flattering dresses that make her look like a walking doll. So cute!

ESTP

Mugen, Samurai Champloo Mugen is one of the three main characters of Samurai Champloo. His appearance is that of a guy with messy black hair who wears baggy shorts. He seemed rude and quite a conceited character, the type who does not like to agree with people who are in the limelight, but it’s due to the past he had. He is a wandering samurai who is very competitive and loves to fight on the road not only to test his sword skills but to primarily get a fun kick out of it. Compared to Guts and Levi who acts more quietly, Mugen is more open to conversation and immediate arguments with others. Teresa of the Faint Smile, Claymore Teresa is a Claymore who ranked first in Claymore history. It is assumed that she is the most powerful monster, asides from Alicia the Black.  Many people would type her as an ESTP due to her cunning nature and for her love of intimidating people through the use of her extreme skillfulness when battling yomas. Not to mention she’s very verbal when in a group of people.

ESFP

Sasha Braus, Attack on Titan Also known as “The Potato Girl” for showing amazing calmness during the scouts assembly, Sasha Braus is a character most commonly typed as ESFP due to her ability to survive by the use of her natural athletic skills. She blends along with everyone quite easily through the use of her extroverted sensing (Se) as her leading function.  Basically, she is able to float in the group through the use of her easygoing presence and loud personality. Also, her extroverted sensing is her lead dominant function which explains the sharpness of her senses every time she perceives danger coming from afar and instantly acts on her gut instinct. Gabi Braun, Attack on Titan Season 4 Gabi is a new character from Attack on Titan Season 4. Her personality is that of someone who is confident in her abilities but is also viewed by viewers as narrow-minded and impulsive.  Her sole belief is that people on Paradis Island are only true monsters. Like Eren, she swore to kill every one last Eldian who reside there. She leads with extroverted sensing (Se) which causes her to jump aggressively into a situation and wins, rather than taking a step back first and plan carefully in order to win.

Conclusion

There are lots of anime archetypes who are typed by using the Meyers-Briggs system. Others look at a character’s personality through the use of cognitive functions, others use the single letter way, but you can do both for personal insight. Anime characters may be fictional but it can add fun to the study by observing the cognitive functions that each wonderful character uses whether in an anime show, movie, or book, in order to construct a further discussion. From time to time, it’s okay to have a favorite anime character from our favorite anime show that reflects our personality.
